The Month of May is Motorcycle Awareness Month—Nationwide and in California

May 10, 2011 - The month of May is Motorcycle Awareness month to help make motorcyclists aware of the dangers and drivers of automobiles.

The National Safety Council is spending Motorcycle Awareness month reminding drivers that they are sharing the road with motorcycles and should be alert when on the same roadways.

According to David Teater the senior director of the National Safety Council stated that both vehicle drivers and motorcyclists need to be alert to each other on the road. Teater stated that during the spring and summer the number of motorcycle riders will increase and so will the amount of injuries and deaths.

The National Safety Council offers drivers some tips to avoid collisions with the motorcycle on the roadway to help drivers understand that motorcycles require the same advantages as another vehicle on the road, including following ad a distance behind the motorcycle and being cautious at intersections.

There are also tips for the motorcycle rider by the National Safety Council, which includes staying in a position where the bike is not in a drivers blind spot, do not ride in poor weather conditions and use turn signals when making turns or lane changes.
