May 17, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports riders that were on the road for Shriners charity were injured in a crash. The 15th annual Shriner’s Charity ride Sunday involved a crash that three people were injured and transported to the hospital according to the Utah Highway Patrol at approximately 10:45 a.m.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Jesse Valenzuela the crash occurred when a male rider did not see the group of motorcycles ahead of him slowing down. The rider did not break soon enough to keep from colliding with another one of the bikes carrying a man and woman in the eastbound lanes of I-80.
The woman involved in the accident was flown to University Hospital with head injuries and listed in critical condition. The man involved was transported by ambulance, along with the other man to a hospital in Park City with injuries. There were 657 riders registered for the charity ride that raised an estimated $16,000. for the Shriners Children’s Hospital, according to organizer Tim Gallagher. After which the gathered in West Bountiful Park for the fundraiser celebration that was marred by the accident that injured motorcycle riders that were a part of the charity ride.
The family of the man and woman at the University Hospital stated that the couple lives in Sandy and were awake and alert, but asked not to be identified. No word whether or not the man’s survivors have retained a motorcycle lawyer yet for wrongful death.Officer Valenzuela stated that I-80 eastbound lanes were closed and reopened at approximately 12:30.
Director of public relations for the Shriners Hospital Mike Babcock stated the accident was one too many and that they wanted riders to have fun and be safe while riding for the benefit of the hospital.
